More and more, residents are assessing the walkability of a community as a key factor to compare the quality of life a community offers. Reducing pedestrian and cyclist fatalities is an explicit goal of our local and state transportation agencies. Pedestrian deaths disproportionately impact low-income residents. The affordability of a community cannot be assessed by just looking at the cost of expenditures. The cost of housing must be viewed in the context of the income that can be earned in the community. Generally, housing costs should not exceed 30 percent of a household's total income. As housing costs climb in some areas, wages have failed to keep pace, and this discrepancy may put a large segment of the population at risk. Transportation costs are a family’s second highest expense, behind housing.

2026 TAKEAWAYS

Given the increase in net migration over the past several years, Tampa Bay’s roads are more full, less safe, and additional frequency and modalities of public transit are paramount needs.

The 2026 report shows that Tampa Bay’s average commute time has gotten slightly shorter (about 18 seconds) now sitting at 29.26 minutes. We are still above national average. While many metro areas saw lengthening commute times, ours slightly reduced.

The share of drivers with one-hour-plus commutes increased from 10.49% to 10.53%, representing more than 219,000 individuals. This shift in performance can likely be attributed to the migration of residents within the region who have moved in search of more affordable housing options, resulting in longer commutes and signaling the pressure our growing population places on infrastructure.

INCREASING VALUES

  • Increasing commutes and long commute times reduce time with family and may decrease job satisfaction and productivity. A high value in the commute time categories may indicate long distances between affordable residential neighborhoods and job centers and may also mean residents are seeking employment outside of the region.

DECREASING VALUES

  • Decreasing commute times enhance worker productivity and satisfaction, and may indicate improved urban planning. Shorter commutes also improve quality of life and improve air quality.
