Safety

The quality of roadways has a direct impact on household and business expenditures and represents the safety, efficiency and desired state of repair of a community's transportation infrastructure. More and more, residents are assessing the walkability of a community as a key factor to compare the quality of life a community offers. Reducing pedestrian and cyclist fatalities is an explicit goal of our local and state transportation agencies. Pedestrian deaths disproportionately impact low-income residents. These deaths are generally viewed as a result of poor urban planning, lack of sidewalk infrastructure, and user behavior.

Affordability

The affordability of a community cannot be assessed by just looking at the cost of expenditures. The cost of housing must be viewed in the context of the income that can be earned in the community. Generally, housing costs should not exceed 30 percent of a household's total income. As housing costs climb in some areas, wages have failed to keep pace, and this discrepancy may put a large segment of the population at risk. Transportation costs are a family’s second highest expense, behind housing.

2024 Takeaways

Based on findings from the 2024 Regional Competitiveness Report, Tampa Bay saw annual improvements in 5 of the 7 indicators in this grouping, which is a great sign of upward educational attainment.

Notably, of the two indicators that did not improve, Tampa Bay fell 7 places in ranking for STEM Degree Production per 10,000 Residents. Our value of 12.39 is more than two times less the rate of the U.S. average (28.51).

On a positive note, the region saw an increase in the rate of residents aged 25-34 who have attained a bachelor’s degree or higher, improving by 1.6 percentage points year-over-year, while the U.S. average increased by only 0.66 percentage points. Austin, the top performer at 58.07%, outpaces Tampa Bay’s performance by over 20 percentage points.

INCREASING VALUES

  • Having a high percentage of degree production has been shown to have a direct correlation with other prosperity outcomes.
  • Increasing rates of graduate level degree production increases the talent pool for specialized and high-paying roles.

DECREASING VALUES

  • Decreasing values are a sign that the talent pool in Florida may not have enough supply to fulfill workforce demand.
  • Additionally, lower rates of certificate and degree production may lead to falling economic vitality and civic quality outcomes.
