2026 TAKEAWAYS

Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) awards rose to over six dollars per capita, a 40 percent year-over-year increase, moving us  to 12th in our competitive set.

In 2024 alone, Tampa Bay received almost $34 million dollars in funding.

It should be noted that congressional authorization for the SBIR/STTR program expired last fall and remains lapsed.

University R&D rose by $58 million dollars to $467 million, keeping Tampa Bay at 16th for the 6th consecutive year.

Tampa Bay’s patent production declined for a third year in a row to 0.66 patents per 10,000 residents,  holding us at 19th place. National patent production is rising, which indicates increased competition for ideas, talent, and investment.

University and Technology Licensing Income fell by around $600K compared to the previous year at $4,254,016. Despite this decrease, Tampa Bay’s ranking improved from 14th to 13th place. Raleigh Durham leads the competitive set at $97,263,023
