Safety

The quality of roadways has a direct impact on household and business expenditures and represents the safety, efficiency and desired state of repair of a community's transportation infrastructure. More and more, residents are assessing the walkability of a community as a key factor to compare the quality of life a community offers. Reducing pedestrian and cyclist fatalities is an explicit goal of our local and state transportation agencies. Pedestrian deaths disproportionately impact low-income residents. These deaths are generally viewed as a result of poor urban planning, lack of sidewalk infrastructure, and user behavior.

The affordability of a community cannot be assessed by just looking at the cost of expenditures. The cost of housing must be viewed in the context of the income that can be earned in the community. Generally, housing costs should not exceed 30 percent of a household's total income. As housing costs climb in some areas, wages have failed to keep pace, and this discrepancy may put a large segment of the population at risk. Transportation costs are a family’s second highest expense, behind housing.

2025 TAKEAWAYS

Job growth slowed to 1.75%, mirroring national trends, but our ranking slipped from 8th to 9th. South Florida is leading the competitive set in job growth with a rate of 2.59%.

Tampa Bay remains an attractive metro for establishing new businesses. Business establishment rates increased slightly to 13.59%, holding our position in the top 5 alongside other strong performers like Orlando and South Florida. This a positive sign that people want to move here and that Florida has a climate and regulatory structure conducive to entrepreneurship. 

Advanced industry GRP growth slowed from 10.63% to 4.99%, and our rank dipped to 12th.

The share of advanced industry jobs grew significantly from 15.44% to 21.73%, propelling Tampa Bay to 4th place from 12th, a testament to our growing presence in tech and innovation. It can be assumed that the Advanced Industry organizations within Tampa Bay are thriving and increasing their production and economic impact.
